The Wayne State University School of Medicine published the first study to directly link dental insurance to cancer outcomes. Cuts to dental insurance under Medicaid were associated with a 6.9% decrease in the detection of early-stage oral cancer. Survival for oral cancer is dramatically higher with early detection. There is a 70% five-year overall survival rate for stage I versus 35% survival rate for stage IVA. John Cramer, M.D., FACS said, “I think this helps to bolster the case that dental insurance is not just about clean teeth but is important to the role of cancer screening,” Dr. Cramer said.
