Health concerns and work pressures during the pandemic caused widespread mental health problems that will reverberate far into the future, according to a report by Unum. "The ongoing pandemic has exacerbated the mental health crisis, but it has also helped normalize the need for mental health support,” said Swapnil Prabha, vice president of Workforce Wellness Solutions for Unum Group.
Fifty-six percent of U.S. workers, primarily Millennials and Gen Z, say they were mentally unwell in the previous year. Additionally, 42% of employees needed time off from work to deal with their mental health, according to a survey by Unum.
The survey also reveals that:
- 70% of employees say their employers could do a better job of reducing the stigma around mental health
- 30% say their employer doesn’t do a good job of promoting mental health resources
- 42% say they’re more likely to seek mental support only in a crisis
- 35% say cost is the biggest deterrent to getting mental health services
- 33% are a part of the "Sandwich Generation," meaning they care for elders and children, which often comes with greater financial burden, and, at times, devastating stress
