The Harris Poll for XP Health recently published their white paper The State of Vision Health 2023. This includes an original survey of 1,009 full-time employed adults in the U.S. over the age of 25.
According to this original research, the respondents value vision care as much as dental, but many are confused about how to take advantage of it. This appears to be the case even when they have vision benefits.
The data also indicates that 94% of employees view vision benefits and vision health as valuable while 60% find them to be very valuable. This is similar to how they view general health coverage. In fact, 82% say that vision benefits are just as important as general health insurance.
However, only 42% of respondents say that they are very satisfied with their vision health. According to the survey, cost is the biggest barrier to properly taking care of vision. Out-of-pocket costs were cited as the most common factor (30% of respondents) and 64% of respondents who wear glasses agreed with the statement: "I often leave my appointments with sticker shock with how much my glasses cost."
Despite these financial misgivings, 68% say they are not likely to sacrifice their vision care due to economic uncertainty.
